  • A lot may depend on your attitude when you contact the dealership.

A neighbour has just got hold of a car which has over a years wait due to the other customers circumstances changing. I'm sorry I don't know if the financial implications but I bet the dealer will be more than happy to discuss options with you. With such long wait times it's inevitable that things happen, try not to worry and focus on getting back on your feet.
    take care

I can't see any reference to cancelling at this point, only 14 days AFTER delivery.

Was your purchase a fully remote process?
Does the 14-days after delivery to which you refer mean the contract falls under the CCR:
    https://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/regulation/consumer-contracts-regulations-ajWHC8m21cAk

If so "Your right to cancel an order for goods made at a distance starts from the moment you place your order and ends 14 days from the day you receive your goods"

It has to have been a fully-compliant remote / distance sale for that to apply.

Thank you for the additional input everyone.

Spoken to the dealer and we CAN cancel without charge. Without us requesting it, they said we'll get the deposit back too.

Sounds like they are getting lots of cancellations anyway - our initial estimate for delivery was 8 months: new orders are 12 - 18 months! Not even a build date for ours yet.

    Thanks again.

In theory, they can sue you for the full value of the contract that you now wish to breach. In practice, and in the current market for new cars, they'll just retain your deposit and sell it on to another customer.
You can't cancel a contract without penalty just because the contract doesn't say you can't! Otherwise there would be no point in agreeing a contract.
Without us asking for it, they've offered to return the deposit. I guess the fact that they've taken loads of orders they can't possibly fulfil in anywhere near the time they said they would has influenced this.
  • I ordered a new Kia Ceed back in November 2021 as a lease car. By March 2022 there was no update about a likely build date and due to changing work circumstances I needed a car sooner rather than later. I managed to get an in stock deal elsewhere and when I called the Kia dealer they also had no issue with cancelling the order and returning the deposit.

I think with such long lead times it is happening quite a lot, plus as mentioned elsewhere demand is such that I'm sure it's not hard for them to find new customers for cars already ordered.

Yes, lots of people seem to be cancelling. There's some other models already on the way here, available around Christmas, so we might switch our order to one of those.

    That is great news!
Many thanks for updating us as many do not bother.
Good luck with your replacement car.

My Partner had an ID4 on order for over 12 months now with the date being constantly pushed out.

We have given up waiting and gone for a cheaper alternative with a short term hybrid lease deal (Existing car written off).
