Shell Energy Bills
My bill states that if I stop my monthly direct debit the standing charge per fuel per year will rise by £48 or £96 total. My current bill states my electricity standing charge at 42.4 pence per day or £154.76 per year and gas standing charge at 28.48 pence per day or £103.95 per year a total of £258.71. If I stop paying by direct debit then I can deduct £96 from my standing charge total. I could save (£258.71 - £96) £162.71 per year. Am I missing something here?

Why do you think you can deduct £96 from your standing charge?
If you stop paying by direct debit and start paying cash-equivalent, then both your standing charge and unit rate will probably go up.0 -
The bill doesn't say that just that my standing charge will increase by £48 per fuel per year - £96 per year total. It doesn't say that this is on top of the 42.4 pence electricity standing charge or 28.48 pence per day electricity standing charge it implies that it is instead of it.0

"Will increase". That means goes up by. So 'whatever you pay at the moment, plus this extra bit'. It doesn't mean 'replaces'.Y_Me said:The bill doesn't say that just that my standing charge will increase by £48 per fuel per year - £96 per year total. I'm not doubting you but why don't they (Sell) say so. There are so many questions they won't answer like when most of our electricity is from renewable sources why are we charged market rates for electricity tied to the gas price.0

They do say so. They say exactly that. You've even quoted it twice.Y_Me said:I'm not doubting you but why don't they (Sell) say so.
That's entirely different matter - discussed many times on many threads here. Roughly speaking, you can't pay a wind farm less than you would pay to a gas power station because otherwise the wind farm would just sell to someone else who will pay them more instead.Y_Me said:There are so many questions they won't answer like when most of our electricity is from renewable sources why are we charged market rates for electricity tied to the gas price.0 -
Just to put it another way, if you have only have gas or only have electric, your standing charge will rise by £48 per year. If you have both gas and electric, your standing charges will rise by a total of £96 per year (£48 per fuel).0

IF your landlord sends you a letter that there is an £100e increase to your rent , do you think you have to pay only £100 in future?0
