PayPal for private sellers ?

What type of PayPal payment should I be asking for when selling items on Facebook Marketplace as a private person not a business to avoid refund claims or scams ?
I inform my buyers I only post items at the their risk, I keep proof of posting thats all I offer, no refunds or returns. My items are accurately described used items, usually vintage tools or parts nothing scammers really would be interested in and there is nothing dodgey at my end.

If you want to take the attitude that you have absolutely no responsibility for items once you post them, then you need F and F payments only, although you run the risk of a determined scammer going via their bank and claiming fraud which you cannot defend with a F and F payment. What a buyer cannot do with a friends and family payment is make any claim for Item not arrived or item not as described.rufuschucklebutty said:What type of PayPal payment should I be asking for when selling items on Facebook Marketplace as a private person not a business to avoid refund claims or scams ?

However, taking f and f will limit you as any experienced buyer will consider you a scammer. We constantly warn buyers not to trust any seller who won’t take a safe payment, nor consider themselves in any responsible for items once they get them in the post. Most private forums and groups on Facebook will also ban you from selling.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Most of my items are collected, I only post on my terms since I don't have to do it, the buyer has this choice which I make clear, I can wait for another buyer locally to collect as it's not a business, I don't see it as a bad attitude at all, I package and take it to the courier for nothing if someone asks for posting. If I have to accept possible claims then I will have to use signed for delivery and it will cost them more.soolin said:

Standard parcels and large letters cover the seller up to £20 for loss, and standard parcels also have proof of delivery. At the moment Royal Mail have an offer on RM24 and RM48 which is a tracked service with £00 of cover for the same price as online standard packages. I can send a small parcel up to 2kg insured with delivery confirmation for £2.85.rufuschucklebutty said:

I sell on Facebook and most of my sales there are posted and I treat my buyers exactly the same as I do on any platform.
Incidentally, it might be worth doing a test run on a FB listing, FB were introducing a US style system where posted items had to be paid for via the FB platform (at a cost) for a while new sellers were forced onto this scheme- but I think it might have been suspended as there has been very little mention of it for a few weeks now. It is worth checking though.
Normally I would have suggested Vinted for you, but it seems unlikely from your opening post that your items are in their allowed categories unfortunately. On Vinted buyers seem to have less od their legal rights than they do anywhere elseI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I just charge extra to any Facebook buyers that want postage.
Full value of the postage including insurance, I also charge them the extra for the carrier to collect from my house.
Plus I charge them for the PayPal fee so they can pay by goods and services.
If they don't want to pay all that they can come and pick it up.
Sometimes I think it would be better just to advertise the item at a slightly higher price to start with and post it for free as its got to be quicker to go to the post office a couple of times a week than wait around for buyers to turn up late if they even turn up at all.0 -
RM aren`t currently charging for picking up parcels so that might be worth considering. I use RM all the time.0
