What ever you use for a thin screed you will still face the problem of frost heave blowing it all up, a channel is the best choice.1

The exterior grade ones like Ardex K 301 won't if the surface is prepared properly first.1

The only trouble with near level is that because it's never perfectly flat you still get a certain amount of ponding.
Also, I don't really like too smooth a finish on concrete, as it can get a bit slippery in the winter. I prefer a tamp or broom finish.1 -
