Is it possible to share a PDF or word document directly to facebook and Twitter?
Someone seems to think its possible.
I usually share the link for the document from my google drive where i have saved it.

You can but not on personal pages. If you create a group/business page you can attach your PDF/Word/whatever to that but you can't attach them to posts not in groups.
