British Gas - confusion over published standard variable for electricity

Apologies if this has been asked before…..Recently moved from fixed to standard variable, both with BG.  Letter from BG says my new standard variable is 35.313p pkWh with 42.679p per day standing charge.  Both appear higher than capped rate.  I understand VAT is included on all rates, including the capped, so why the difference?  Thanks in advance for clarification (and yes I have tried contacting BG directly about this.  Impossible to get through.)

Just seen there seem to be regional variations!  What’s the point of having a “universal” price cap if some people are paying more than others

There isn't a “universal” price cap.  The rates have always varied regionally but that's too complicated for a headline summary so a  mythical 'average household' is used.

The "universal" price cap is the maximum price for a typical user in an average region.

You are not in an average region, you are in an actual region.

You're probably not a "typical user" either, as they seem to be a very elusive breed.  :)
