Insurance between exchange and completion

Hi,

Which insurance companies have people used to insure the days between exchange and completion dates please?

  • You just take out ongoing home insurance for the year. It carries on from completion.
  • Do research the TrustPilot 1* reviews once you've chosen an insurer. I got caught out going cheap, they were cheap for a reason.  They didn't have enough staff to answer the phones, or trades to help when my roof was blown off last November.

I took the insurance for both buildings and contents at exchange.  I only had six days between exchange and completion and it hardly made any difference.

If any of your friends are Which members, ask them to look up recommended insurers, the people they survey have all had to claim.  From memory LV and John Lewis came out well in the comparison charts.

It's a while ago now, but our solicitor who was doing the conveyancing arranged a short term poicy for the gap between exchange and completion and we then set something up ourselves to start from when we had actually completed. Unfortunately I can't remember who the solicotor arranged it with, but if you ask your conveyancer they should be able to either recommend someone or arrange it themselves - they have all sorts of insurance contacts for arranging indemnity policies etc.

Nationwide, our lender, offered automatic cover free between exchange and completion if we took their cover from Completion (10+ years ago).  As they weren't the cheapest, we just switched after a year, but at the time it was really simple to do as part of the home loan porting process
  • Any insurance company you want to use. I used LV last time, Aviva this time.
    2006 LBM £28,000+ in debt.
2021 mortgage and debt free, working part time and living the dream
  • My insurance is with Churchill and when we recently moved they provided exchange to completion insurance for free

Why is this needed please? Sorry, FTB here and hopefully exchanging soon, just figuring out everything I need to do! I thought you just started a new policy for the new house when you exchanged, and that was then just your insurance for that house going forward? Do you need a special one for in between exchange and completion?

It seems like the answers from this thread suggest it's a normal policy from exchange, so I'm happy with that.

I've only ever taken out standard buildings & contents insurance at each move. Some insurers will let you double up for a few weeks (between exchange & completion when you still own your previous property) but it's likely the contents part of your policy won't be valid on the new house until completion. As always, make sure your insurer is notified about what's going on.
