Every driver feels like their driving is very good. In one study, of people who were in hospital as a result of a single-vehicle accident, those people still thought that their driving was above average.
Not to say the OP isn't a good driver, or hasn't done the IAM course, but I'm not entirely sure how much difference that'd have on fuel economy.3 -

You're also way out of date in thinking that autos get less mpg than manuals.
Modern auto-boxes are pretty efficient and do a better job than most drivers.0 -
TBF mine was on a bike but I remember getting one of the worst ever MPG's on one of my assessment rides (and I passed)[Deleted User] said:
