If you are not easting on the day, do as we do, look at the dates and grab from the back of the line of stuff. But always check the date.
We don't shop physically at Tesco but online since Covid and their use-by dates on the home delivery are pretty decent. We shop mainly at Morrisons and at times Iceland's physically shop and check the dates and every couple of weeks at M&S and we check the dates there as well.
So check the dates but I've found Tesco stuff often lasts beyond the sell by date easily we keep stuff in the fridge even the bread and take out slices a few hours before needed0 -

Today I got some burger baps, usually 3+ days with todays date, last week it was a pack of sausages, again dated that day... Not a massive deal for me as they're both freezable but it makes my life so much easier if they actually write it on the receipt as they should. One day I'll not spot an unmarked short date, hopefully just on bread and nothing dangerous.0

I've got friends who bin vegetables because the date on the bag tells them to, they don't look at the vegetables. They certainly wouldn't buy vegetables if the bag told them they were too old.If vegetables look old and "sorry" then don't buy them. I take potatoes out of the bag and put them in the salad drawer in the fridge. No idea what the date on the bag was, if they look alright I eat them.
There are certain generations who will use the food just going by the feel, smell, i was taught to smell test, if it smells off then its off.
There are other generations who will go by the date on the bag, alot of food is wasted if you go by the date on the bag.0 -

This sounds petty but it's getting very frustrating as of recent.
I only realized this after i bought some wraps and then noticed they were moldy 2 days later, then saw the use by date was well gone, basically the day i bought them.
Now i have started looking more at the dates before buying food, my local Tesco's is selling most of their food which is around 2 days until past Use by date (not best before).
This very frustrating as its basically impossible to shop for a week as your food gone off within 3-4 days easily. Is this some kind of ploy by Tesco's to ditch old stock or is this even Legal too?
Secondly the food waste is insane, as you have moldy food sometimes 4 days after buying it so have to ditch.
be interested to hear thoughts and what to do if anything.2 -
I shop in Tesco and always reach to the back of the shelf and check all the trays of bread to choose the longest date as Im sure many others also do so the freshest stock is being take first but that is down to the stock rotation.
I have noticed in our local Tesco that when you go to the fresh milk section you can find the racks of milk with sometimes 4 or 5 different dates. Why they put it all out at the same time beats me as everyone takes the cartons with the longest date.1 -

I buy online so I have no choice with the dates. So that I don't miss anything, things with a use by date I write the date with a thick marker pen where I can see it when I open the fridge. Things with a bbe date I don't usually check the date.0

Tell me you have never worked in supermarket with out telling me you have never worked in a supermarket. The answers on here just shows it. Do you understand what pressures staff are under to get stock on the shelf and move on to the next task. I use to do shelf stacking over night over 20 years ago and had to have the store ready for the next day with all shelves fronted up and we where open 24 hour a day. So customers were coming in and taking stock shelves that we had just fronted up. Its long hard work for rubbish pay and being treated as lower than the low.
