I give out my postcode and mobile number to collection only buyers.
I only ever give my house number out when they ring on the agreed day (and around agreed time) so if they are a no show, they don't have my address.
You can agree a lower price on the day, but that is down to you, they cannot force you to accept.
If they pay electronically, don't release the item without the QR code (they can claim non-receipt), if they don't let you have it, you are entitled to refuse to hand it over as you are complying with eBay rules.
May you find your sister soon Helli.
    Sleep well.

This was an eBay classified ad so eBay aren’t involved in the payment and take no FVFs, so the QR code is not needed. Usually cash is expected unless seller agrees to some other form of payment.

My postcode covers 4 properties,so wouldn't work for everyone.

still 75% less likely to be burgled for the advertised item if you only give them the postcode

Thank you all for your replies.

The postcode-only tactic is something I will remember for the future. Given how we are still being mucked about I doubt that I will ever use Bay again, though.

I use Freegle and other recycling schemes a lot and have very, very rarely had problems. It just shows how screwed up things get when money is involved!

If it's expensive - and they are paying while standing there in front of you - and they're using their bank app - make sure the money is clearly in your account before parting with the item. There are a number of scam apps that 'look' like they've sent money to your account, and their 'balance' will drop - but it's all fake. No matter what the reason, no matter what they say - don't let the item go until money is clearly in your account.

Thanks for the heads up, Chris. Always good to know what is going on out there.

We are doing a cash only deal.

Probably a good idea to have one of those pens to check the notes, in that case.
  • I try to choose a public place that I know is covered by CCTV.

    Cash or Bank Transfer only.

As mentioned above, check your own banking app on your own phone to make sure the money is in your account before giving the item.

With cash, meeting at a Post Office or Bank is a good idea, so it can be paid straight in.

I once sold an iPhone for £700.
I was given cash - all £20 notes.
When I went to the bank the next day to pay it all in I was told it was all fake (the old paper notes at the time).
Fortunately, I had CCTV coverage as the deal was done at my local train station. The police also traced a sim to the phone via its IMEI number etc, and were able to catch the person (who had since sold the phone on) but he was ordered to pay the £700 via the courts - so I got the money in the end! Took a year or so to get there, but I got it! lol
