Erratic energy consumption overnight - is the meter faulty?!

I am with British Gas for both my electricity and gas, on a prepayment tariff. Can you not get meter readings on your IHD?
The IHD shows the index TOTAL of all the registers that have been used since the meter was installed. For example, for an E7 tariff with R1 02600 and R2 04300, the IHD would show 06900. This has caught some people out.
