Barclays Refund Cheque - Bounced!

Options
Hi there

Way back in March I closed my Barclays Credit card down and paid off all my debts.

Fast forward to last week and Barclays send me a letter stating there's a balance on my account of £2903 - I'm not allowed to be in credit so here's a cheque.

That cheque just bounced today. Before I call Barclays can anyone offer advice on what's going on?

Anyone else had this happen recently?

Many thanks

A cheque drawn by Barclays on their own account bounced?

Has the Barclays audit process thrown up a "payment in error"  (ie that you were not owed any money or at all events not the sum shown on the cheque)?

Presumably back in March when you paid off the card and closed the account, you were satisfied that you had paid the exact amount outstanding?

If so, why did you not raise a query with Barclays when you received the letter and cheque?

Otherwise, (again presumably) you realised somewhat belatedly that you had indeed miscalculated to the tune of  nearly £3000 so are actually owed this sum - if so, time for a complaint?

Barclay's can give advice to what is going on. Though they might have to figure it out first.

I suspect they cancelled the cheque due to an error.

What do you mean? All cheques are drawn on own accounts.
If you mean drawn by Barclays and deposited to Barclays, then there's no indication in the OP that the cheque was deposited to Barclays.

    What do you mean?

I mean that a person with authority to sign for and on behalf of Barclays drew a cheque on the company account of Barclays in favour of the OP.

I’d expect you to get a letter in the post giving the reason why it’s bounced. It should be with you within a couple of days so it’s probably worth waiting until then.

It's obvious that this cheque was sent in error. Why on earth would you, or anyone else, overpay by three grand when clearing your credit card balance?
You've chanced your arm and been knocked back.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

That's not the way I read the post - as you say it seems highly unlikely that anyone would repay with such a surplus, so to me it seems more probable that the credit balance arose from a refund, of which Barclays have been making many over the past few years:

If this is the case, why did the cheque bounce?

I was simply highlighting a more likely (IMHO) version of why it was issued in the first place, rather than the one put forward in the post I was replying to, but wouldn't see either root cause as being any more or less likely to have caused a cheque to bounce!
  • What was the answer given on the cheque ie the reason it was returned unpaid?
