Faulty item cost less than travel to store to return

I recently purchased a item in store at Ikea worth £25 and the item has developed a fault after 3 weeks worth of usage.

I have noticed if i had purchased the item online I would be entitled to a free collection and refund but I have been informed I can only receive a refund if I return the item to the store I purchased it from but it will cost £33 in petrol based on current prices or over £100 in trains and buses.

Am I able to insist on the collection service as this is already a service provided to online customers or can I claim towards travel cost?

Having spent more than the cost of the item to get to IKEA and buy it in the first place I'd suggest that the MSE solution would now be to throw it away and if you really must have a replacement buy it online.

What is your time limit for when you can return it for a refund?  Put it aside and take it for a refund if you go that way in that time?

Depending on the size of the item it could cost £4, £15, £19 or £40 to get the delivery to you in the first place from Ikea.

You really spent £33 in petrol, plus wear and tear on the vehicle to purchase an item worth £25!?  You must have been pretty desperate for the time as fuel costs suggest over 100 miles each way.  Bin the faulty item and order again on-line.
