Strange noises from the loft???

Options
Hi all, I've got my heating and hot water set to come on via a timer. Not too sure what sort of system I have got to be honest, but we have a gas boiler in the kitchen, an immersion heater in the bedroom cupboard and a water tank in the loft.

Anyway, when the heating comes on, and then periodically whilst the heating is on, there is a rumbling sound from the loft, to be honest it sounds like a wave at sea brewing and then crashing??? Then the odd banging pipe.

Anyone got any idea what this could be? We've lived in this 12 year old house for 4 years, and this has only just started to happen of late.

Any ideas on how to sort it out would be appreciated :)

  • Hi

Your water is boiling. The pump is failing or, if you haven't noticed any difference in the time it takes to heat the house, the boiler stat is failing.

  • Possibly the expansion pipe from the boiler has fallen into the water tank stopping the gases from escaping.
  • Is the best bet then to get a plumber out? And is this likely to be a costly problem, or a nice quick and cheap fix?

The tank in the loft isn't easily accessible either, due us living in a new house, so the trussed rafters prevent easy access as the beams are flying everywhere.
  • Hi

Yes it would need someone who knows what they are doing as regards to c/h and boilers. If pump/ boiler stat is the problem then relatively easy to fix.(depends on the boiler for the stat.)

  • Thanks for the advice then :)
  • Someone mentioned the thermostat to me, might be worth replacing as they are only cheap.

Hot water switched on and all is fine. It's only when the actual heating is on that it makes the racket.

    What do you reckon?

I think he meant the boiler stat, not the room stat. The boiler has its own internal one to regulate the water temp in the system. The room one would not effect the actual water temp.

  • Hey I know that mate, fingers crossed i've now tracked down my problem.
