When I had tenants I would have been horrified if a gas supply had been found in that condition and would have immediately ordered a new engineer to go and do a test.
If your landlord is so unconcerned about the possibility of the gas supply being unsafe and not wanting you to have an independant person look at it, I would agree with the others that you should move as soon as you can get out of the contract to somewhere with a landlord who wants their property to be safe and in a decent condition.Credit card debt - NIL

My concern is that if we do hire someone (we have a builder friend who will be able to recommend a reputable and qualified Engineer) and a fault is found, that the LL / Rep will then claim this is as a result of the person we hired and try and pass liability on to us.
This has already been the case with regards another issue at the property where the LL authorised and transferred my partner the money to pay for work to be done only to then claim that our contractor had made the problem worse, which was simply not the case. Nor were they our contractor as far as we are concerned.
Honestly, if I provided a full list of issues with this place along with how much we paid upfront and the difficulty we've had in getting anything done, you'd think I was making it up before realising it's so crazy it could only be true.
What do you think happens next if the Gas Safe Engineer decides the system is dangerous and caps off the supply ?No free lunch, and no free laptop2 -
Rather than creating a new thread, unless that would be better, just going to ask this here.
Does anyone know where we stand with passing on far higher than usual utilities costs, Gas and Electric? This being due to having contractors in to undertake the repairs to the bathroom and re-fitting.

Since moving in and this being the first property we have had a smart meter in, we have managed to average for both utilities to be approx. £2.50 to £3.00 a day. We generally only exceed this now and again on a Sunday if doing a Roast as it requires the oven to be on significantly longer.
Between the 4 days last week, and the 2 days so far this week, with the contractors in and heating having to be run more than it would due to front door being left wide open as they come and go, windows being open in the bathroom, lights on upstairs and the charging and use of tools / machinery, each of these days have exceeded £6.00 with yesterday actually passing £7.00.
I know this seems quite frugal but given they are being immensely difficult with us, I do not see why we should have to incur these costs when it is through no fault of ours. Had they taken on board my advice in July and investigated the source of the bathroom leak then this work would have been done in the height of summer and lights / heating etc. would not have been necessary. I may have even turned a blind eye to paying for powering tools / equipment.
As it stands, there is 1 more day to finish the bathroom, but after that is completed there is a long list of other issues they have been instructed to resolve and as such will be here many, many more days yet. Ultimately this will add up.
