If the letter says you are entitled, isn't that enough to make a claim? After all its their error, not yours?
You're not supposed to have to claim anything, it's supposed to just be credited to your energy account … which only works if you have an energy account.

It all seems a bit messy, not enough money to go around so they devised this high energy cost system to keep the budget down, then budget allocated to people who dont pay a bill.
  • But are any of us actually surprised that they seem to have messed it up?!

I have an energy account with Octopus and used to get the automatic discount as part of the broader group, but now it's directed to the person (my son) who is disabled and isn't the bill payer and doesn't have an account. The letter issuer and Octopus each day there's nothing either can do.

I'm in the same position. My brother received a letter saying he will get the WH discount off his energy bill, because he is on DLA and ESA, but he doesn't have an energy account in his name. The letters are obviously going out automatically, without any thought for how the scheme will work in practice. Gov.uk says only the bill payer and partner are eligible, but that was last year. The scheme this year is different. There will likely be tens of thousands in this position, all asking the same question. Hopefully Martin can get on to it and find out the answer.
Thanks. You got in one what the predicament is. I posted in hope Martin gets onto this anomaly which many are stuck in.

i think looking at the guidance online the account can be in the name of the person the dwp have as the 'appointee' to deal with bills for you. so maybe thats a fix for your son?
