Advice needed I live in Scotland in a flat with night store heaters. No other fuel. I have two meters and following MSE advice I fixed day meter until next March but night meter on standard variable (EDF) As of October my daytime electricity is cheaper than the nightstorage. What can I do come March when both highly likely to be higher. I have renewed heaters to modern ones which are more efficient. I am on a limited income but don't qualify for any grants.

👏 Thanks for all your thoughts. I am with EDF and a v. Helpful young man fixed my non heating meter last year.
My system seems similar to comfort plus mentioned although I am going to check with Home Energy Scotland.
I am doing a lot of what you have recommend but had not considered the timings when charging, makes sense so will investigate.
I have invested in smart plugs etc.

Brought up in a no electricity house till mid fifty's so not too phased by cutting back!!!!😜

i didn't know you could fix your day and night on differnt tarrifs!

it might be there is a good fix for your night meter that someone could recommend as i know there are different suppliers offering differnt fixes based on your day night split but i dont know if you could move just one meter to a differnt supplier.

@EssexHebridean is the person i've seen post most about e7 so they might be able to help

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

  • Hi,
I'm confused so, day fix, night variable, never heard of that arrangement, who is your supplier?
  • This will be on a THTC setup I assume? If so then make sure you have a thorough handle on your timings as you get the additional “off peak” time slot during the day as well don’t you?

First up on the NSH’s, many of the modern storage heaters can be programmed to take charge at specific times so that is worth investigating if you are paying less on day rate than night. It “might” be that this will work for you - but if the heaters are only fed via the night rate cabling then probably not possible.

Best advice I can give for using NSH’s is to really learn about your heaters and how they work best. Keeping a close eye on the weather not only for the next day but for a few days ahead is vital as that means you can avoid getting caught out by an”unexpected” cold snap unless it genuinely IS unexpected by everyone. If you have programmable heat release times then take the time to fiddle with those as needed too - once our programmable one goes back on it will be tinkered with regularly according to what our movements are for the week ahead - I usually try to set it up a week ahead as that means it knows what’s going to be expected of it and it then works with the programming in mind to an extent. You can still amend if needed though. Other stuff I’ve learned about ours included that although it is a high heat retention model, it does still one sufficient warmth while charging that there’s not much sense in putting it on first thing - and NO point in putting it on while it’s still in it’s charging time either really. It would have to be pretty cold before I’d set ours to start output during the night rate timings.

Other than that, it’s just the common sense stuff really of making sure that you run appliances when it’s most cost effective - using time switches or smart plugs can be a boon there to make sure stuff runs exactly when you want  it to!

I'm also confused at this 2 tariff setup.   I've lived in Scotland, north to south over many years and had the Scottish Power comfortplus meters which I understand are similar to the THTC of the former Scottish Hydro.

Comfortplus comes in 2 different forms: -

Comfortplus Control - one meter on 24 hours controls all heating and hot water (but storage heaters and immersion are switched on and off by radio timeswitch by SP).   The second meter again 24 hours controls everything else in the house.

Comfortplus White Meter is slightly more complicated.   One meter is radio controlled by SP and only runs storage heaters and overnight water heater - at a slightly cheaper rate than either of the other things on the second meter.  The second meter is like E7 in that it has a day rate and a night rate.

Haven't come across the system OP mentions.
