Break in cover - No claims discount

Due to an error with the insurance company I have now not been insured on my house for approx 20 days and they are saying I need to start from scratch with no- no claims bonus, even though I've never had a claim in over 25 years! Whay does it have to be continuous?

  • It's up to each insurance company to set their own rules. Shop around on comparison sites, or try a broker.

There isn't any no claims bonus as such on house insurance and no requirement for continuous insurance, other than what the mortgage company might insist upon.

The question will usually be along the lines of have you made any claims in the last 5 years, and you answer yes or no accordingly.

you can ask them to provide you with a letter stating you have not made a claim in the policy you have held with them for X many years and the first application declared X many years of no claims prior to joining

just to add, this is something that may be difficult for the first line customer service department individuals but a complaints letter will get this done if there is any issue.

There is, but its not as wide spread or as established as it is with motor

The other issue, which you haven't addressed, is that most ask how many years of continuous insurance you've held as that in conjunction with your question gives a whole picture. Else someone buying their first ever policy will all say nil claims but that's notably different to those that have held insurance for decades and never made a claim
