Laptop spec - Black Friday coming....!

Options
I recently upgraded from copper to full fibre internet, with minimal affect on my laptop speed. Old laptop, windows 8, needs upgrading.
Use is mostly email, shopping, searching/surfing, downloading docs etc. No gaming, very rare video use.
Have considered a tablet but don't like the keyboards and do a fair amount of word/excel. Prefer a decent size screen too.

A bit of research and I'm thinking
 screen 12.5 - 14" ish
CPU Core i5 or Ryzen 5 or i7
Storage SSD (PCLex4 (??)
Display 1920 x 1080
Graphics Intergrated eg Inte Iris Xe
Connect wifi 6
Asus? Dell? HP?

Does the above look sensible when bargain hunting?

What laptop do you have now?

You may be able to upgrade to 10 at a minimum with minimal cost.

Most of the delay maybe in the website your visiting.  Computers from a good few years back are still more than capable
of handling all the tasks you require quite efficiently.

Does the speed improve if you plug into your router via Ethernet as opposed to WiFi?  If so, then the WiFi is to blame for slowing you down.

I take you've been through all the "clearout" steps - empty recycle bin, clear cache, browsing data, etc. already? Maiware scans, too?

Have you consider upgrading to a SSD and increasing RAM on current machine? Will be a lot cheaper than a new one.
  • I agree with adding more RAM and an SSD drive, but first we need the current specs.  You might even be able to upgrade the CPU for a few quid, depending on the laptop and how confident you feel at disassembling the laptop.
I was given a laptop for free because it was too slow.  The first thing I did was install an SSD, which rewarded me with an instant speed boost.  I added more RAM, as I don't feel comfortable making the SSD compensate for laziness.  I then added a new CPU, more because it was peanuts on eBay and the speed boost was actually worth it for me.

more research needed as they are pretty meaningless without the generation

Full spec of what you have there may be an MSE route to get it usable again.

Do you need a laptop  there are some really good micro options that can clip behind a monitor.

Not fully portable but luggable if it spends most of the time in one or two places.
