Standing charges
When I check my smart meter first thing in the morning it shows electricity 72p and gas 28p I assume that this is the "standing charge" . I'm with BG and live in Herts, doesn't seem to tie up with the advertised rates! Anyone know why this may be? I don't have outstanding debt on this account and pay by direct debit.

I think you are looking at the In House Display (IHD) rather than the smart meter as SM's don't show the unit rates, just the energy used I believe.
The gas 28p sounds about right - and the Electricity is presumably your overnight use plus the standing charge? Assuming the time is set correctly on the IHD what does it say shortly after midnight?🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

What type of smart meter do you have?0

What you see on the IHD is only accurate if the supplier has sent the correct tariff information to your smart meters. The IHD displays the usage and cost data taken from the communications hub which sits above your electricity smart meter.

Gas standing charge (under the current caps since Oct 1st) is 28p and Electricity 46p:
https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/information-consumers/energy-advice-households/check-if-energy-price-cap-affects-youStanding Charges
Average standing charges for customers on default tariffs will remain capped in line with the levels set for the default tariff cap from 1 October for a typical dual fuel customer paying by direct debit.
- 46p per day for electricity
- 28p per day for gas
But it does state if you are on a default tariff. Do you know what BG tariff you are on and what is the standing charge on your actual bill?0 -

Is the 72p for electricity always the same?
I would expect it to be slightly different if it is SC + usage over night for example for things like fridge freezer, router etc.0
