I was in credit and I couldn't get it refunded so I changed to a variable direct debit, I didn't have a direct debit taken this month and next month I have worked out I shall only need to pay a £3 direct debit.

Then of course the next month I will have to pay for what I use but it will still be less than what they wanted my direct debit to be.

And my energy company does not have any of my money as credit.
DO you mean that you have a standing order now?  I have tried to do this with direct debit but the energy company said it was not possible?! I have asked for explanations, and they are unable to provide.
a variable dd is a direct debit. just one where the supplier can change the amount taken each month so it matches the bill. not all suppliers offer one and some call it differnt things (i understand edf call it 'whole amount monthly') so it depends on who you are with (tho you can change suppliers as long as you arent in debt with your current supplier).

you can't go into debt with this payment method (well you can but check your supplier terms and conditions as lots charge you penalties if you do and will start debt collection action much faster than for a dd monthly customer) and i wouldn't normally suggest this time of year is the best time to change to variable bills as you will immediately be paying for higher winter use (heating) without having had the time of low use in the summer to put money aside if you need it.

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?
