  • sigh........if I put my mortgage and CT as essentials and my other utilities/house and car insurance etc comes out of the £76.50 per week, that leaves me £40 per week absolute maximum for food, petrol etc and to be honest, that's about what I'm living on anyway. Wouldn't change my situation though as losing my job meant I could have savings for the first time ever and I choose to do the job I'm doing at the moment.

Still a bit depressing though and maybe I do need to look for a slightly higher paid job.

Good luck to all that sign up !!!

Hi Keren29, don't despair, why not join this challenge and the MSE 'start a cottage industry' challenge that's in the 'increase your income' forum? That way you can budget on your 4k and try to earn a few pounds extra at the same time? That's what I'm doing. Also, have you looked into the possibilty of claiming tax credits if you are working? They have a ready reckoner that lets you find out if you are eligible to apply. I was totally amazed when I found out who can claim. If you haven't already done so, check it out at www.hmrc.gov.uk

Good luck whatever you decide to do. :)

    Can I join please?

I certainly know I can do this as I'm on a very small wage, and with the back-up of you guys then I'm sure I'll succeed and get rid of my debts if I'm brave enough to actually write them down and 'face the fear!':o

I'm new to all this, and the PC. So can anyone tell me how to change and update my signature. Sorry but I'm old and a bit on the slow side, so make it simple please!:rotfl:

Hi Funbrum and welcome to the MSE forums.
If you look to the top of this page there should be a row of words beginning Main Site, Forum, User CP etc. You just click on the User CP and then look down the left hand side to see where it says Edit Signature. Click that and it will open a box that lets you type in your details. Save it as soon as you finish typing it and then it automatically adds in underneath your posts.

I have also added your name to the list of those attempting this challenge in 2008. Well done for finding your way here and getting into the spirit of frugality :T

    Can you count me in?
I haven't checked any of my figures (they're at home. I'm at work :o ) but 4K looks a good number.

What I'm not going to include is my flights to & from OH (and his flights home) which I've budgeted £4,000 pa for.

My family is sometimes just me and the cat, and sometimes includes 3 kids & their partners.

Your name has now been added. The list is on post 1 of this forum. Cheers for joining us

  • Hi Nyk

I'm working as self employed (AQA) and already do some mystery shopping as well as all the click thrus on just about every site (they even have their own folder in my Favourites file!!) I'm not entitled to anything such as tax credits/benefits as I have £25,000 in savings (I was made redunant). I'm desparately trying not to use them but I have subbed myself a couple of times which I think is the indicator I need a better paid job. I don't have anything to Ebay as I'm down to the bare essentials now. I've looked at the Up Your Income board a few times but never seen anything else I can easily do.

I do have an interview at the beginning of January for a part time job which could sit along my self employed work which will ease things but only a bit.

Believe me - MSE is ingrained in my life!!! I cleared £25,000 of debt through MSE, it really changed me! (all hail the mighty Martin!)

I am fascinated by this challenge. I currently live on £850 per month. That includes £100 commute to work and £113 council tax. I have a couple of questions:

    1) I am a single parent - do I get extra for my daughter? Obviously my costs are much higher than a single person. I also have some high essential costs related to music exams which she must pass to go to college plus usual cost of being a teenager.
    2) my daughter has a commute to school cost (placing request following bullying) of £70 per month. Can this count as essential work costs.
    3) I am not a dfw - can I still join?
