    Hi all,

I'd like to join in Living on £4K for 2008. There is only me and DH but I have 6 dogs to feed too  I live abroad so can't take advantage of all the offers in UK but I think I can make some cuts here and there to do this. I've finally got debt free and would like to get the mortgage paid off and also get some money into a savings account for a rainy day. So count me in :T

Welcome on board, Alassa. I'll get your details added to post 1 and set it at 3661 for 11 months, if that's ok? As usual, my visits here are sporadic and I sometimes waffle a bit but I'm just a total frugaloholic now and well on my way to eccentricity. I like to think of most of my frugal friends as trainee eccentrics, so come on down and join the frugal fun. You, too, can sucumb to this money mayhem and madness :j :j

    Hi Guys,

I've just been to collect DGD from nursery and, once again, our local primary school has surpassed all my expectations of making children aware of green campaigns, recycling and frugaling. :T They already have a mini fruit garden at the school, complete with apples, soft fruits and jam making in classes, but I have just walked past their next 'creation' and I was quite stunned by the ingenuity of it! :T They are building a new bike shelter in the playground - by recycling plastic bottles! I'm gob-smacked! I have never seen anything like this and the thought would never have crossed my mind, but there it is, for all to see - the beginnings of this fabulous little construction. My mind instantly jumped to GREEN HOUSE! :j

Basically, it's a wooden frame with wires interlacing the framework, From the base, they have an entire row of empty plastic juice bottles of the 2 litre variety (like the savers cola etc.). I'm assuming these have been partially sunk into the ground. The next row of bottles have had their bases removed (cut off) and have been sat over the top of the first row. Lids have been left in place, so it has a bit of spot colour, but the walls are completely constructed by the empty juice bottles stacked row upon row into a solid wall of plastic bottles! I think they are all wired together and supported by the wooden structure. It just looks so brilliant that I will have to get a photograph when it's finished and show you all what it looks like. And here was me wondering how the school was able to recycle plastic bottles when it's one of the things that there's no local processing amenity provided! Our local primary school collects most things - used stamps, empty ink cartridges etc, but this is just ingenius. Apologies if you have all seen this kind of thing before, but it's a first for me and I'll certainly be continuing saving plastic cartons for my own recycled tomato house. It really is awesome! And double(plastic)glazed! :D And I'm guessing that milk cartons could be utilised equally well, although it would be a more 'frosted glass' finish to it. :)

Hi i have been reading this thread since it began and just wanted to let you know there are pictures on the internet of greenhouses made of plastic bottles, one in Idaho and another in scotland. I have a picture but cannot add it as I don't know how yet.

Yes I will do the same, we get a monthly newsletter from school with all the bumf that is happening plus any permission slips that have to be sent back etc.

Have suggested to the head that as we are an Eco school majority is emailed direct to parents rather than snet home "hopefully".

Most pa\rents these days are online at least a couple of times a week (day in my case)
    My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
    So we’re empty nesters.
    Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman

Just got back from picketing the Council House in Victoria Square, Birmingham City centre. I work for Birmingham Social Services and all Birmignham City workers were asked to strike over our grading and pay. I'm on annual leave anyway so thought i might as well do my bit. It was a great turn-out as some of you may see on the news coverage. :T The best part was a pub in the city centre was inviting all council workers on the picket line to a free buffet in support for us. My BF and I, he also works for SS, had a few spare ribs and sausage rolls for our lunch, YUM! I like free!;)

I then had to buy my grandson a birthday cake for tomorrow and discovered a coupon for a free packet of Snack-a-jacks. :D All in all, not a bad day, I just had to pay for, train fare.....£2.90 (It would have cost me more if I had taken the car into
the city centre, with the parking fees)
    Cake...........£4.98
    Milk.............£1.34
    Eggs............£1.28(6 free range, for pancakes)!
    2 Limes.........£0.32p
    = £10.82
