right i think i've worked out my budget, i have decided to keep the car payments, tax, ins, petrol, repairs, mot etc as seperate, even tho its a necesity, sons DLA cover that, which at the end of the day is to cover costs incurred by their disabilities.
    phone/broadband 30
    glasses 10
    life insurance 20
    gas 35
    electric 35
    tv licence 11
    house insurance 15
    xmas/birthdays 15
    shopping 250
    total 421 X12 = 5052

call it £ 5000 for a nice round figure

Thanks for the advice. I've included holidays in the £4K as it'll be our honeymoon. We were married in September and haven't been able to take our honeymoon this year, so I am including it as a necessity :D I do have £100 of travel vouchers as a wedding present, plus some others, how would you suggest that I deal with them in the scheme of this £4K/annum?

Belated congratulations then on the wedding! I think vouchers that you have been given can be used as extras to the £4000.

I'm really happy. I had some selection packs left over from some stuff I was organising. Usually I would either eat them or give them to just anybody. But I checked the use by date and it's after Easter. So I'm keeping them to make a glorious chocolate bar exploding hamper for the extended family for Easter. (Only DS gets an actual choc Easter egg - everyone else prefers bars).

I'm also doing my cardmarking later so am pleased with myself about that too.

  • hey!!

I've thoroughly read through these posts and this is the challenge for me! I must be mad!! I don't know if I'll manage, I don't know exactly how yet, but it's a fine idea an I'd love a number please!!
I have a real problem with spending, and I've never tried challenges really, so why not see if they work motivational marvels on me?!?

One thing first; can you please absolve me from a pre planned large spend early next year not to count?? I have already 'paid' £400 for a special something (as in, it's in a separate account waiting to be spent) but I can't buy it till the new year, just in case it goes in the sales!!! Please let me know if this is allowed.......!

:D I get asked this a lot and I think it's because I have had the same user name for so many years and, depending on the subject, most assume it as a male name for some odd reason. But I am definitely female :rotfl:

Congratulations on the wedding Ddraig, and I agree that the vouchers should be looked on as the equivalent of savings. Good luck with the challenge and I hope you get a great holiday in 2008 :)

Hi Guys, I have done my draft spreadsheets for the next three months, and have put in my provisional "living" expenses for the purposes of this challenge.

Will be interesting to see how we get on............I am very much looking forward to the challenge proper though! Roll on Payday, then I can transfer the money into the housekeeping account and make a start!!

Isn't this quite funny? Waiting for housekeeping allowances and turning frugal life into such a great passtime. I've been hooked since 1999 when doing my first 'feed a family of 4 on £10 a week' challenge. I must dig out the notes and see what the meal plans were back then :)

I can't remember a time in my whole life where we have not had to budget, but this just puts a different "spin" on it - we have always had separate accounts for bills, debts, and housekeeping, so really we should be used to it, but the lines get blurred, and amounts moved from one account to another to cover shortfalls etc, so this really just gets me to focus again more clearly, on what we have been doing, to a large extent, all along!

  • I would love to join the challenge puleaseeeeee...if y'all will have me.

I am a family of six. Two adults, one teenager and three labradors. We have just moved house with a humongous mortgage and would like to pay it off asap. By spending carefully throughout the year, I can save up alot quicker...I think this challenge will really help me keep a close eye on spending and have more financial awareness.
I am going for £4500 spendies in 2008.

    I wish us all luck X X

    P.S Nyk...can I have a number too?

I thought you were male, until I read your post about 'shared shopping'. Somehow I couldn't see a bloke getting excited about that!
