You might as well save a little money when the sun shines. My dark blue aluminium camping kettle is already full of water and standing on the patio. The water will be hot enough for a bowl of dishes by late this afternoon

Any dark, metal container will do. A black aluminium roasting tin with a lid etc Not shiny silver. Cover a glass jug or dish with black paper or card, you could paint the paper and it will also work but dark thin metal will be more efficient.
  • That really is old style...

Well done - it's more important than ever to save energy. I'm using today's sun to dry my towels and runnign shoes.

We have an older thread on this subject. I'll add your comments and move the thread to the Green and Ethical Board where you'll get more replies.

About a year ago I changed the light bulbs in our house to the energy saving ones. In the 12 months before the change our average usage was 9 units per day. Since we changed to the energy saving bulbs our average usage is still 9 units per day.

So in our case energy saving bulbs were a big waste of time and money.

Sorry if this is a thick question (there may be more!) but, have I read it correctly that if you turn your tv OFF but leave it plugged in and switched on at the mains it is still using electricity?

I just mentioned this to my husband and he says he has heard something like that but quote "If you think I am going around unplugging everything at night you can forget that!".

Yes it still uses energy however it depends on tv some are better at conserving energy than others but mots modern tvs are more energy efficient same goes with most appliances

My tv you can turn energy saving mode when its on, it uses less power in the LCD backlight. When tv is off, after about 15 minutes I hear it go on energy standby

I put tv on standby during day unless I dont watch tv during day is is more often than not. I have tv, freeview pvt, wii etc on a switch able extended socket. Dont always use amp, dvd or wii every day so they go off. I turn socket off at wall each night

...or if you are in the house and getting chilly and can't justify putting the heating on go for a walk it burns the energy you've already paid for.
