Not sure if this is the right board but wondering if anyone out there has one of these and can help with a query about halogen/LED bulbs? Dimplex doesn't appear to offer any CS route - phone calls are answer phones saying they "are prioritising vulnerable customers" before ending the call?? and their contact form requires proof of purchase which I don't have (its 6 years old)
We have an opti myst electric fire Gosford | Dimplex We don't use it for heat - the fire effect is lovely and we have it on more as a decorative kinetic light type thing. It's very realistic!
Anyways... It uses 4 x 50w halogen blubs. My question is - is there any reason why I can not replace the halogens with LED's?
Any thoughts gratefully received.

i know theres a problem (or used to be a problem) with led and dimmer switches. depending on how the stove makes the light affect then it could be its not as good or the bulbs burn out? i really dont know but maybe the best thing is to try and see (especially if you have the bulbs you can use somewhere else in the house if you dont like the look)Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you. It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?
Please consider buying some pet food and giving it to your local food bank collection or animal charity. Animals aren't to blame for the cost of living crisis.1 -
Hi, I have just replaced two of my halogen bulbs with LED. The reason I have only replaced two out of the four required is that the heat from the Halogen is required to make the smoke effect work . Had the fire in for the first time last night and it takes a little longer for the smoke effect to work.
I don't mind it being a little different but you might. There are lots of reviews on amazon when buying the LED bulbs for the opti myst.1 -
Is it relying on the heat from the halogen bulbs to create the effect? LED bulbs will obviously run a lot cooler.
I know that the old Lava lamps of the 60's required the heat from a conventional incandescent bulb to generate the effect of the "lava" (wax actually!)1 -
Yes, they rely on the heat for the effect to work correctly. I have changes two bulbs and it still looks ok.1

Halogens come in 35W and 20W. Perhaps you could try reducing them down?

@ariarnia - there is no dimmable feature but I hadn't thought of that.
@Jackie1813 and @Mister_G - of course, the heat - doohh - I should have thought of that, that makes complete sense. I must be using the wrong search terms as I couldn't find those reviews. I will give it a go changing a couple of the bulbs to see if it works ok, 200w for several hours isn't great really for what is in effect an expensive lamp0 -
