What date should I set my Variable DD for?

As Octopus are now going to charge more if you don't pay by DD, I have changed from paying by debit card to variable DD.
They bill me up to 15th of the month, so I get the bill a few days later.
Just wondered what date people think I should set the DD for?
Thanks.

You ask for bill date to suit yourself allowing for them taking full payment minus any account credit approx 10-14 days after bill is produced

that could mean theres to long between the reading and payment or not enough time for them to adjust the dd to the bill that month and the op would end up paying the default amount (which would defeat the purpose of moving to variable dd).

i would suggest about the same as bristolleeedsfan and say your looking for at least 6 days after the bill is generated so 6-10 days would be my advice.

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

You don’t set your own direct debit date for variable direct debit, they send you bill & that should state the date they are taking the payment, usually 14 days  after the date of the bill

we have had more than one thread on here with people who have moved to variable dd and there dd date hasn't lined up so they have had to contact there supplier to get it moved as it was causing problems and the default amount was being taken each month (the most recent i remember was with edf). so someone can certainly call and get there dd date moved with variable.

Octopus let you change your payment day as well as the payment amount.

The direct debit is not moved, the billing date is to coincide with the date the customer wants the direct debit to be taken
  • I was told by Bulb that they can take the debit 'whenever they want'! I had been sending a reading on the 21st of each month, getting an accurate bill which was debited on the 7th. Then they attempted a DD on the 24th Oct, claiming they have a right to vary the date (& thereby increasing the amount that is estimated). If i want a fixed date, they say it has to be a fixed amount at - guess what - almost double my October usage! Anyone know if this breaches DD T&Cs, not to mention their duty of care in a cost of living crisis!

EON told me that if they didn't receive a meter reading 3 days before your bill due date then they would collect a fixed amount rather than the actual amount and then adjust on your next bill once they have a reading.
