Can the £66 help credit from British Gas be lost if the DD goes below this amount or is stopped?

My account with BG already has a large credit and my usage has been almost zero for a few months as I was away abroad so if I submit a meter reading my DD will quite possibly be below £66. If this happens can I lose out on the help payment? Would BG always issue a refund for a large credit and continue with a DD for current use or would they suspend taking more money with DD? If they suspend the DD without cancelling the instruction would I lose out on the £66 or would I have to claim it differently?

If the £66 exceeds the amount of the DD then the balance is simply credited to your energy account...
So 'worst case', if the DD was set to £0, there would be a £66 credit to your energy account.

We're going to be forced to cancel our DD because the energy company are estimating next year's usage (not cost but USAGE) as 4 times what it was last year. We can't get an intelligent response from them when we point it out. We've installed logburners and solar for this year so their estimated usage is going to probably be 10 times reality.

Who are you with? Are you giving them monthly meter readings? Do you have a balance higher than 1 months actual usage?

My DD with BG is taken as normal and then they refund the £66.00 into my bank account and that was even with my electric account being in debit

That is correct as long as the DD is higher than £66, the OP was concerned about a DD below £66...

  • BG told me the support would be paid directly to my bank account, so the DD would not be affected. However, they are going through a system change, which apparently will take up to 28 days. So my £66 has not been paid because of this. It took me 5 attempts at online chat and over 2 hrs to get this info. Seems no one at BG really knows what’s happening. 28 days for a system change seems excessive ?
