Electric shower vs bath

I've been trying to find in general terms whether it's cheaper to have a short shower using an electric shower vs having a bath supplied via a combi boiler. Everywhere I've seen compares mixer or thermostatic showers vs baths but not electric. I have an 8.5Kw shower and usually in it less than 8 minutes a day, so for arguments sake use 1Kwh. How does this compare to drawing a bath from my worcester bosch 34Kw boiler?

I know I could just try it out and take meter readings between but I just wanted to get a general idea.

8/60ths of 8.5 is 1.13kWh. At 34p/kWh it will cost 38.5p (energy only, water will be another few pence).

Heating 50 litres of water from 10C to 40C will take 1.75kWh.
At the moment, gas is 10.3p/kWh but your combi boiler moght only be 80% efficient when heating water so you might use 2.19kWh of gas to heat the watere for your bath. This will cost 22.5p.
You'll use a bit more water in a bath but not enough to change the balance.

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

I should've said, I'm not on a water meter so water usage isn't an issue.

Looks like a bath marginally takes it.
  • Boiler is a Valiant 28kw
Over an average of 8 fully filled baths i used 0.518 m3 gas units or an average of 5.84kWh. At 10.24p per kWh costs 60p.

I can't bear baths. Is it just me? Sitting and washing myself in my own used water. No. Some people I know even wash their hair while they're in the bath. How can it be clean?

Showers all the way for me. Ours is electric so I guess not too cheap. But much cleaner in the long run. And we hate wasting water - it really should be something we do all think about, whether on water meters or not.

probably more like 80-100l than 50l for an average bath in the UK

Same here.  I can understand they can be relaxing but I'd need to rinse myself off with clean water.  And certainly not washing my hair in it.

    But, each to their own.

...and heating 10C to 40C might be optimistic, too.  Our incoming water can go as low as 4C in winter...and a 40C bath temp would result in complaints in my house!
