The other point is that it’s quite hard to get people at all at the moment.

I needed a plumber, and I paid £120 an hour. Plus vat. I tried half a dozen other firms, who didn’t have the experience to do that work.

It’s annoying because I could have done it myself, but the experienced plumber undoubtedly did it better.
It is difficult and we had a mixed bag of quotes over the summer. My OH finds it really difficult admitting he needs help any way.

If you quibble too much about price he may decide it's not worth doing the job at all.  Or he may do the obvious stuff and leave the hard stuff.  If he doesn't have to remove the stuff that's cut back from site, it would be easy enough for him to hide big stumps which are hard to remove, as an example.
I got quotes some years ago for garden clearance, and made it clear that roots/stumps had to be removed and everything removed from site.  Two of the quotes were very similar and the third was half the price.  I asked for the quotes in writing and the cheapo one was just going to cut planting back to ground level.  No removal of stumps and roots.  Another reason to get quotes in writing.
  • We have someone else coming out Monday, they've been in the business a long time and have a solid reputation.

I was quite happy to help support a young man starting out but I can't agree to say £600 of work and not know what I'm going to get for that.

If you can tell him why in a friendly manner that would probably help him to know where he needs to improve - that is if he wants to.

It would also leave him amenable if you considered his help in the future for more straightforward jobs.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

If he replies to my last message I will, he seems a nice enough chap and he does seem keen to work.

There is no need to explain anything to somebody who has quoted for work, other than to thank them for their quote but they have been unsuccessful.
