Ford Eco Boost Engine failure again !

Hi all

In 2016 I purchased a Ford focus 1.0 ecoboost from a Ford dealer . I had the car 4 months when I broke down with no warning. Diagnosis was a hole had developed in the coolant pipe and subsequently the vehicle lost coolant and my engine was terminal.

Thankfully the garage it was recovered to made me aware that Ford had recalled this year/ model due to coolant pipe issues . The car subsequently had a new engine courtesy of Ford.

6 years on and having done the same amount of miles ( now 72k) I broke down again. As before it was recovered to the same garage who told me I need to contact Ford as they deem it to be the same issues as before.  It has now been assessed by Ford who today confirmed it is the coolant pipe again and I can have a new engine under the Ford EcoBoost goodwill scheme.

Obviously I am pleased that I am not having to find £3500 for the work myself ! However this car will have had three engines in the time I’ve had it & and after breaking down on the M6 with my son which was a horrendous experience I don’t have any faith in the car at all . I don’t want that car back !

My question is, has anyone had the same experience? Did you just accept the new engine again . I’d prefer to have the value to put towards something more reliable ? What are my rights here ? I feel I was sold a car that was always going to fail 😩.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

If I were you I'd have the new engine fitted and the get rid of it, unless of course you want to get involved in a long running dispute.

They are doing the decent thing by replacing the engine.

I agree as it will be worth more with a brand new engine and hopefully Ford will have finally sorted out the coolant hose issue

The car with the replaced engine will be worth something in the £8-10k region? Compare that to a £3.5k payment and a car with a broken engine which is maybe worth £1-3k.

Not that you will ever likely get them to agree to pay out the £3.5k you would be worse off anyway. Get them to sort the car, sell it and buy something else if you don't trust the engine.

Get it fixed - get it sold. Quickest, easiest solution.
  • Thank you all. That’s the clarity I needed. I’m still angry / upset so I knew my approach would be a hot headed one ☝️

At 6 years old Ford could have said NO or just made an offer towards the cost. The first one was done under warranty so lucky you - an old car with a new engine. Do as other have said get it fixed and sell it

As others have said, get it fixed, sell it and don't by another Ecoboost!
The coolant pipe is just one of their serious problems that ruin engines.

Count yourself lucky the timing belt (in oil) hasn't given up the ghost, you'd be paying for that mess.

You might want to start researching a relaible replacement now to try an avoid similar problems in future.
