Hello,

I had a smart meter  installed when I was with Scottish power. It came with a secure pip 500 display device to check on usage. I then changed to EDF and the unit topped working and I had to submit my own meter readings until last year. Anyway, was having a clear out and came across the home device and plugged it in. It has connected and picking up my tariff but the bill figure is showing as estimate ? Any ideas if this will ever show me my usage as I go? I have found a user guide online but pretty useless and nothing about why it’s giving me an estimated figure. (There is no way I have used £16.06 and £7.86 in 2 days )

anyone else use this device?

thanks

I'm not familiar with this particular in-home display.

So the tariff info shown on the IHD is correct? Often it isn't, but if it is it means that your supplier has sent the info out to it - and this, in turn, means your meter is connected to the DCC, so it should be working as a smart meter.

  • @QrizB  It shows the correct standing charge and unit price - I double checked on the EDF app. I’m just not sure why it’s an estimate on the display? I definitely haven’t used that much energy in 2 days, my average at moment is £3 per day.  Maybe because I only just plugged it in today and it needs time ? Will keep it on for a while and see what happens. It’s a very old device (2016 ish) . Do you think EDF would supply a newer one if I asked or is it something I have to buy myself?

Is there another version of that screen where it says how many kWh it thinks you've used, rather than £? That might give you a clue as to what period it's estimating your bill over.
When it worked previously did it also say "Est"?
If you check the meters themselves, do they give you a bill value (I know mind does)? And do those match the one on the IHD?

EDF are very unlikely to have one, your meter is (I think) the older SMETS1 variety.
Also, I don't think a newer display will help you; this one is (or should be) getting correct info from the smart meters.
If you really want to buy a replacement, Hildebrand have a SMETS1 version of their CAD but it isn't cheap:

Do check with them before buying, in case your particular meter isn't compatible.

The IHD shown above is the same model which was in our house when we moved in in 2018. It was supplied by Utilita for a Prepayment SMETS1 gas and electric smart meters. We transferred to EDF credit in 2019 but waited until Mar 2021 for the meters to be enrolled on the DCC. Unfortunately the IHD broke in 2020 but all I can remember you can switch between cost and energy screens. I use the Bright Energy app for up to date readings (quicker and better than the EDF online energy hub).
