John Lewis Card Interest Free Offer

I recently switched to the new John Lewis card offered by NewDay having had the old HSBC one for several years. Unlike many people that process went smoothly and I was offered a 0% interest balance transfer for 6months which I decided to use as it would be helpful in the short term, my intention was to pay it off in full within the 6 months. Last month I ensured that I paid the full statement balance not including the transfer on time so as not to incur any interest. This month I have been charged interest. When I queried it, the support chat advised that when there is an outstanding balance there is no interest free period on purchases and so I will be charged interest on them from the date of purchase until the date of repayment. I accept that I should have read the terms more carefully, but this seems to me to be incredibly sharp practice and that the ‘offer’ from JL was misleading. Is this common on other cards? I have never come across it before when using balance transfer offers. Is it worth a formal complaint?
Thanks for any advice!

It's standard practice on cards, with only a couple of cards deviating.

You're charged interest on your transactions unless clearing in full each month and is detailed in the terms. So not sharp practice at all, but rather a very blunt one.

General advice on here is to avoid purchases and balance transfers on the same card.

It can work if you really know what you are doing and choose your card, but is best avoided for most people.
