    Hi. My son bought his first home in July this year. According to his council a person had to be paying council tax in April to qualify for the £150 help. Is this correct?

    That's correct. For England you must have been liable for council tax on 1st April 2022. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/council-tax-rebate-factsheet
    Therefore he doesn't qualify.

    Hi.

    You have said that students are still eligible to claim for the £150 rebate. However I was just told by my council that due to the fact that I was a student and not paying for my council in April 2022 I will not receive the benefit.

    Where does it say that? You can't expect a 'rebate' on something you didn't pay for in the first place. Full time students are disregarded for CT, though that doesn't mean that someone else in their household isn't liable, unless they are all students.

    It's not a rebate on the council tax, it was a method of payment that has been very badly worded.
    An example:People on full council tax reduction (hence no payment of CT) can still get the £150

    Were you in an HMO as they are not entitled to it?

    11. To provide some immediate relief for these rising costs, while targeting those most likely to require support, the government expects billing authorities to provide a £150 one-off payment to a liable council tax payer (or an occupant where the property is exempt) where they occupy a property which meets all of the following criteria on 1 April 2022[footnote 1]:

    i. It is valued in council tax bands A to D. This includes property that is valued in band E but has an alternative valuation band of band D, as a result of the disabled band reduction scheme;

    ii. It is someone’s sole or main residence;

    iii. It is a chargeable dwelling, or in exemption classes N, S, U or W*

    There has never been a benefit or welfare payment that has been paid out to everyone who are entitled. There will always be 100,000's of people that are entitled for one benefit or another, but they never seem to bother wanting to make the effort to claim it.
    Constantly seeing adverts telling me to claim Pension credit, Attendance Allowance, PIP etc etc. The government know that the take up will never be 100% so why bother wasting more money on adverts.
