Hi. My son bought his first home in July this year. According to his council a person had to be paying council tax in April to qualify for the £150 help. Is this correct?0

Is this correct?That's correct. For England you must have been liable for council tax on 1st April 2022. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/council-tax-rebate-factsheetFor Wales it was 15th Feb 2022. https://www.newport.gov.uk/en/Council-Tax-Benefits/Welsh-Government-cost-of-living-support/Welsh-Government-Cost-of-Living-Support.aspxTherefore he doesn't qualify.

Hi.
You have said that students are still eligible to claim for the £150 rebate. However I was just told by my council that due to the fact that I was a student and not paying for my council in April 2022 I will not receive the benefit.

macman said:Where does it say that? You can't expect a 'rebate' on something you didn't pay for in the first place. Full time students are disregarded for CT, though that doesn't mean that someone else in their household isn't liable, unless they are all students.
An example:People on full council tax reduction (hence no payment of CT) can still get the £150

To provide some immediate relief for these rising costs, while targeting those most likely to require support, the government expects billing authorities to provide a £150 one-off payment to a liable council tax payer (or an occupant where the property is exempt) where they occupy a property which meets all of the following criteria on 1 April 2022[footnote 1]:
i. It is valued in council tax bands A to D. This includes property that is valued in band E but has an alternative valuation band of band D, as a result of the disabled band reduction scheme;
ii. It is someone’s sole or main residence;
iii. It is a chargeable dwelling, or in exemption classes N, S, U or W*

Class N: (1) A dwelling which is either– (a)occupied by one or more residents all of whom are students;
(b)occupied only by one or more students as term time accommodation;
(2) for the purposes of paragraph (1), a dwelling is to be regarded as occupied by a student as term time accommodation during any vacation in which he– (a)holds a freehold or leasehold interest in or licence to occupy the whole or any part of the dwelling; and
(b)has previously used or intends to use the dwelling as term time accommodation;

There has never been a benefit or welfare payment that has been paid out to everyone who are entitled. There will always be 100,000's of people that are entitled for one benefit or another, but they never seem to bother wanting to make the effort to claim it.
Constantly seeing adverts telling me to claim Pension credit, Attendance Allowance, PIP etc etc. The government know that the take up will never be 100% so why bother wasting more money on adverts.0
