Relocate a BT pole

I just bought a house a year ago.. and was using my driveway without dropping the kerb.. i have now applied to drop a kerb and got refused because there is a BT pole on the side of the verge where the wing of the kerb will drop.. however i want to know if anyone has had the same situation and how much it cost them to relocate a pole?

It will be an Openreach pole now, rather than a BT pole.

You can ask them about it here: https://www.openreach.com/building-developers-and-projects/altering-our-network

But I've heard people say that they'll charge a couple of hundred pounds for a 'survey' first - i.e. to come and have a look. And then quote a couple of thousand for moving the pole. But I've no first hand experience.

I recall someone talking about it and I think the survey is close to 400 quid. Ask and see what they say. We considered this about 20 years ago and from a quick phone call if I recall correctly it was thousands but you need to check. I did not go further than the phone call.

Every situation is different and personally I I can't see it costing less than several thousand at least if things are in your favour.
  • Well i have emailed openreach and haven't heard back from them.. but obviously not knowing how much it willbe is a worry and they cut kerbs the way they wanted before but now they cant apparently 🤦🏽‍♀️ In my situation they apparently cant work around it even though there still is a 40-60 cm gap between pole and drop down wing

A colleague was quoted just under £400 for the survey and it was intimated that the actual cost of moving the pole would be over £10000. Every case is different of course but clearly it would be a seriously expensive project.

Is it not possible to make changes so that the drop kerb in just inside of the pole?

The council will want to make sure there is sufficient clearance that someone using the dropped kerb isn't likely to hit the pole, and will also take into account the effect the pole may have on visibiity.

If the council say the pole is in the way and there is no option other than to move it, then that is likely to be the case.

Can you move the dropped kerb and drive/parking over a bit to avoid the pole?

My dropped kerb extends over the width of the house. There is a lamp standard on the  pavement, on the boundary between my front garden and next door.

Because of the width of the dropped kerb it is easy to avoid it.

  • So this is the front of my house and they can only give me where the cans are from which is fine, but when they need to put a wing at the end of the kerb its apparently really close to the pole.. so i really need the pole to only be slightly moved to the side. I really dont have any other way other then getting this pole
relocated but thought somone might have an exact idea of how much it could
cost.. isit worth me going ahead . Im hearing between £1500-£10000 theres a big difference even though everyone is saying that i will need to pay a surveyor fee £300-£400
