I don't want to have to gather the bank details of a whole load of people, set them up as new payees via online banking and then have no way of knowing whether they actually receive the money unles they have the common courtesy to let me know.
As executor you need to get receipts from the beneficiaries. When I handled my Mum’s estate I wrote one out for them to sign and included it with the cheque, plus an SAE to post it back.
I did that, asking the beneficiary to acknowledge receipt of the cheque and Estate Accounts and included a SAE but they never did so.  They are just ignorant pigs who caused nothing but stress and upset.  The very next day after they received the cheque (Signed For) the Bank rang me to ask whether they could process it so they were there as soon as Bank opened just as I expected.  😉
If you sent the cheque signed delivery, why would you need a receipt? The fact that the cheque has been signed for and cashed is proof enough that its been received by the recipient. Also, what exactly is wrong with paying in a cheque as soon as its received?

Because that’s what the solicitor advised. Anyway, quite  often posties sign for such things themselves.

The rest of the family said the least they could have done was acknowledge receipt and just put “Thanks”.

You don’t know the background to my saga but lets just say it was 2 years of extreme stress, upset and worry and the person who caused all this did their level best to stop probate being granted but the court decided otherwise.  Cashing the cheque immediately was not surprising in their case!

I forgot to add, my mother passed on September 9th 2021 and as far as I’m aware the “executors year” that they can have has now passed.
I also forgot to mention that when I requested copies of the accounts etc they sent me my mothers final bank statement dated 18/9/2021…..but just a closing balance - so I asked for the previous statement leading up to the date my mother passed away (9/9/2021) so as to see the balance on the account at that time. They’ve told me that it’s not available but I know as I bank with the same bank that they can provide up to 5 years of statements. They still refused to do this ??

I’ve also written to them and said I will meet them face to face at a venue of their choice and they can even video it if need be to satisfy their concerns. They’ve point blank refused to do that as well ? I’m now getting to the point where I feel I’ll need to get a solicitor involved but really didn’t want to because of the costs etc…..any ideas would be very welcome please !

As has already been mentioned - open a new bank account - get the sort code and account number - pass it to them - get the money - move on. Getting solicitors involved over flowers and a video link is going to cost you way, way more in stress and money than you'll ever gain back. What are you hoping to gain from involving a solicitor other  than the fee for the flowers and the video link? If you are a residual beneficiary you can look at the estate accounts when completed.

As a residual beneiciary you're entitled to see the estate accounts but they only need to reflect the balances as at the time of death and any receipts or payments after that point. The executor is under no obligation to give you any statements prior to your mothers death.

I'm with cymruchris on this - just take the money, into a new bank account if you feel it necessary, and then walk away from it all.
You're only costing yourself money and grief and are very unlikely to get anything out of it, however frustrating it may feel for you.
