Excel Data Disappeared

I keep my expenses and income on an excel spreadsheet.  I was doing a lot of work on it yesterday, opened it up this morning and all the data has disappeared.  I have a back-up from a few days ago but I don't want to have to redo all yesterday's work.

Is there any way of retrieving what I did yesterday?

Thank you.

What version of Excel do you have?

The later versions only autosave if you are saving to Sharepoint/OneDrive... were you saving it to this or a local drive/other cloud provider?

I have office 365, so presumably the latest version of Excel.  Not sharing the the cloud.  It was in ODP format but I'd had no problems saving it in Excel previously.

I guess I'm hoping there might be a tool online that will enable me to retrieve it without opening up to a world of malware.

To the best of my knowledge, if you arent using OneDrive as the location to save files then there is no autosaving and so if you seemingly failed to save before exiting (as we've all done) there is no working file hidden away somewhere like there would have been with older versions.

Be grateful you have a recent backup - lots of people don't!

My issue is that I had a year's worth of data in the spreadsheet that I spent a lot of time updating and working on yesterday. Then I opened it up today and it had disappeared - not just yesterday's work, but all the data. The spreadsheet was empty.

One possibility is that you inadvertently saved a blank spreadsheet with the same name as the one you were working on. Not that difficult to do if you accidentally hit the "New" shortcut then exit and save the blank one, highlighting the usual filename without giving it too much thought.
We get used to so many keystroke combinations that we tend to do them automatically. Like hitting delete, then the Enter key because it always asks "are you sure?"  :)
