John Lewis Credit Card Switch

I have a John Lewis Credit card which will stop working tonight.

I applied for, and received my new credit card some time ago and switched to using the new card immediately.

My next payment for the old card is 16th November. However, the new card has also given me a statement, the payment date for which is 9th November.

What this means is that I have two credit card payments to make in November from the same brand. And much more importantly in a cost of living crisis, I’m paying for goods on 9th November which under the old card, I wouldn’t have to pay for until December.

Has this happened to anyone else?

It doesn’t seem very smart of John Lewis to operate in this way. I don’t think they explained the implications of THEIR decision to switch providers behind the scenes well enough.

I will be cancelling my new John Lewis card at the first available opportunity.

The two cards are from different financial institutions but under the same branding. Yes - you've got the new card which has a shorter lead-time from statement to payment date, but would have been better to have spent nothing on the new card, and kept spending on the old card until it stopped working. Then that card would have generated a final statement. The new card could then have been used, and its statement wouldn't have come until later - but ongoing it'll always be a shorter cycle than your old card.

It's not really two the same cards - they are independent cards provided by different companies - so sadly you wouldn't be able to 'not have a statement' from the new provider because you hadn't finished paying the old provider.

I agree with you that they could have handled the switch over far better than they have, and there's lots of grumbles out there. Of course you can close any line of credit at any time, but I'm not sure I'd close it down for the reason that you've got two direct debits going out the same month, as that'll only happen on this one occasion.
