Hello!
I have a question about Private Residence Relief. The timeline of my case is important for this issue. So, I hope you can help me.
I lived in the same house since the 1980s. I was single until May 2022. My wife is a Canadian citizen who lives in Canada. After getting married in May this year, decided to sell my house in the UK. So, in August, my wife bought a house in Canada. And I sold my house.
When I sold my house, I was still living in my house.
So, do I have to pay any taxes? Or, do I qualify for Private Residence Relief? The house in Canada was bought by my wife. It is in her name and she is paying its mortgage.
I would really appreciate advice from those who have plenty of knowledge of this aspect of Private Residence Relief.

Thank you for that quick reply. I do have one question though that worries me. Do I still have to declare any of this to the HMRC?0 -
No. There might have been an interesting debate over the availability of main residence relief after your marriage, but as the last 9 months of your ownership is exempt as well as any actual period of residence, there is no possibility of a capital gain arising in your case.0
