Food waste bin

I have used small counter top bins for food in the past, but they were not sealed and attracted very small flies.
I am looking for a sealed, easy opened food bin for food waste that will end up in my brown bin for garden waste.

  • Just empty the bin every day.

You could use an empty margarine or icecream tub with a lid.  I can't be bothered to keep opening mine, so leave it open and do empty it everyday

We have one with a little “catch” to seal it (https://www.dunelm.com/product/addis-recycled-plastic-food-waste-caddy-1000192165?defaultSkuId=30749405 ) and it a PITA as you have to faff to open it every time, which means move to position to open it and then go back to food prep area to grab peelings or whatever to place inside it.

In real use I much preferred it’s broken predecessor which you could open with both hands full of peelings, or whilst holding other bits and pieces…
  • We use one of these from IKEA. It doesn't have a catch but it closes tightly enough to keep smells in and insects out.

It's quite a bit smaller than the one it replaced, but that's been a good thing as it means it gets emptied more often - and before the contents gets too rotted and disgusting!

We have an open bowl on the worktop. We empty and rinse it frequently.

I use a small pedal bin, probably meant for the bathroom, to take all vegetable waste. It's emptied when full. Lives in a cupboard and doesn't attract fruit flies or any other sort.

When I'm doing a lot of fruit or veg I lift the bucket out and peal directly in. Then return it to its cover. It's bleached when emptied.

Meat waste goes directly into the compostable bag and food waste bin.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Does your council not give you biodegradable bags that you can put in the bin?  You can buy them too.  We used to have people who actually stole them by following behind the bin lorries.  As the guy said - why would they do that when they give them out free.  They do biodegrade as if you keep them inside for too long particularly with fruit bits in the bag will get a few holes.  Just fold over the top of the bag after putting something in.

No bags here. I put the food in with the garden waste, which strictly speaking not meant to do.
You are allowed fallen apples from your own apple trees, but not apples from the kitchen.
I like to recycle, so bending the rules is ok.

Try searching mini bin or desktop bin on Amazon (or similar) - I use a mini swing bin which seems to keep flies and smells at bay.

Round here, the council asked people not to put food in the green waste, as they were  having mega problems with rats in the compost making facility.
