Empty house insurance.

The house has been left to us by our late Mum. We are currently going through probate.
We don't have much money at the moment until house is sold.
So can anyone recommend where to go for cheapish empty house insurance?

Property value £200 000.

Thanks

A broker that is cheap for one property may not be for another property. My brother used fresh.co.uk to cover my mother's property while empty under probate.

Make sure you read and understand all the requirements of the policy... most will require steps to be taken the longer the property is vacant such as draining down the water or blocking the letterbox.
  • We used these when going through probate and then having to leave the property empty for quite a while https://www.frontierinsurance.co.uk/?cn=sale_email

This is good advice.  The devil is very much in the detail with specialist unoccupied policies.

Will mum's current household policy not continue cover until completion of probate?   Should be cheaper and better cover.

Most will allow the policy to continue but will have a 28 day max unoccupied clause or such meaning someone needs to stay a couple of nights a month or you dont have cover

Some insurers may exercise policy leniency in the event of a bereavement.   But the OP needs to review:

    1. Policy exclusions for unoccupied properties
    2. Any policy conditions with regards to unoccupied properties

Need to also be aware that a family member staying over for a couple of nights a month may not alter the unoccupied nature of the house (according to policy definition) unless the said family member is a permanent member of the household.

    Discussion with insurer is needed
