I have decided to accept the return. I intend to ask my buyer to open a case, so that I get the eBay fees refunded. I do not think my buyer is entitled to a return, but I believe that my time is better spent elsewhere, eg. listing more items.
Unfortunately I think this is a case where what's fair and what's sensible are two different things. I think you have probably made the right decision - there was no guarantee that eBay would not have forced the refund regardless but at least this way your feedback probably remains intact.

In a way, this is why I prefer facebook marketplace for local sales - they can't just force you to give them a refund after they've used the item for the weekend.
