IPhone 6 battery - worth replacing?

I have an elderly friend who has a very old mobile phone and which doesn’t support What’s app. My grandson has an old iPhone 6 and the battery is pretty much useless hence he never used it very much. He was a bit too young anyway. Is it worth taking it to Apple store and having a new battery fitted and gifting it to my friend, or, should I look for a fairly basic phone ie Samsung which is newer. Thanks very much.

I had my iphone7 battery replaced, used a local company during lockdown who came to my home and did it in the van on the driveway. Couldn't have been easier. Think it was £45.1

Thanks. I had a local company come and do the same for my Samsung 10e and it was £85, which was good. I just thought having it replaced by Apple for £49 it may have some warranty especially if I am able to pass on and tbh as it is old would it be worth it. No idea if she will manage to use Apple phone though! I think she said she has something like a Windows phone.0

I wouldn’t bother with an iPhone 6. Most I would pay is £20 at an independent high street shop. The phone is obsolete.1

To get an idea of the phone's value, you can check on CEX.

They will buy it in for £24, or sell it for £70. (Obviously, that depends on condition and model.)
Spending £49 on a battery doesn't compare terribly well.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?2 -

The phone is obsolete.I too have an iPhone 6 which may be obsolete as you put itBut it still works very well, ok it won't make the beds or cook a 3 course meal but works in all other area's. All said I only use it on a PAYG system but I don't want any more functions.

The iPhone 6 is not obsolete by a long shot, it doesn't get the latest software upgrades and thats no big deal but it does get critical updates, security etc.
There will come a time whatsapp and others may not work but as regards phone calls and texts they are a long way off.
By all means take it to an Apple Store and they will tell you the condition of the battery and anything else that may be wrong including the cost. Inspection is all free of charge.
You can get a cheaper battery at 3rd party stores so could try them also.0 -
It looks like the iPhone 6 is already the oldest iPhone which is capable of running WhatsApp at present, with the iPhone 5 ceasing to run WhatsApp from the new year. Whilst not confirmed, I wouldn’t be surprised if the iPhone 6 then ceases to run WhatsApp within the next year, and if that were the case, I wouldn’t be spending any money changing the battery.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0

Me personally, I wouldn't bother.
Others may differ.
And some others still may not.0 -

Please don't persuade people to use devices which are no longer fundamentally secure. It may be the cheap thing to do, but it is not the right thing to do.0 -
