Are you setting fire to the axe as well?sevenhills said:
I did give it a try tonight. Just at one side, the firelighter burnt but the stump didn't catch light.daveyjp said:It will burn, plenty of videos on youtube. I wouldn't burn anything near a fence though!
I did drill some holes in the stump, but if it does catch fire it might take the fence with it.
I do have an old axe, I will sharpen that and see how easy it is.0 -
Hire a stump grinder, grind it down to dust below the ground level
You can also wrap a chain round it, and a cars towbar and pull it out. if you can get a car near it that is.0 -
There are some great videos on t'internet of people trying that - I wouldn't recommend it!bris said:

They usually end up with the stump in the boot of the car, and a bill for a new rear window.
If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Get someone in with a stump grinder0

isn't there some chemical muck that will burn/dissolve the stump and roots? or has that been banned? Hmmm.... I tried to remove a big Buddleia bush, applying over 400Nm torque from my 2.5 tonne Land Rover in 4x4 low ratio and diff lock, but failed. Best of luck trying to remove a proper stump with anything smaller and less powerful!bris said:

My ex MiL cut down a tree in her garden. She drilled big holes in the stump and filled them with creosote (iirc) to kill it, then easily pulled it up.Now I’ve said that, I’m wondering if creosote is ‘milder’ these days… didn’t they do something with the chemical composition it it?You have the same number of hours in the day as Einstein had. Yes, the 'proper' stuff is banned for domestic sale but is still available to professionals. It is freely available on ebay...YoungBlueEyes said:My ex MiL cut down a tree in her garden.
