So, I'm waiting for the paperwork from the installer (a couple of days) and then need to get that off to my energy supplier (currently with e.on). As Yesterday was nice and sunny all day, I filled the 2x batteries by lunchtime and they ran out overnight.

It raises a couple of questions. Firstly, my batteries (pylontech US3000C + US2000, 5.95Kw), they feel to my novice eyes that I could have not fed or consumed anything from the gird if I had another 2Kw in battery storage, as if this is the situation, mid winter (shorter days, sun further away) , it's only going to get more during the summer.  My aim is to be as self sufficient and not feed back to the grid if possible.

Secondly, I hear it can take months to sort out the SEG paperwork, if what I export between now and then, back dated in payments, or does the energy company get this energy for free (if so, it's no surprise they are in no rush to sort out paperwork).

Thanks for the great advice so far.

Unfortunately until you get your SEG paperwork sorted anything you export will be gratis. Good news is tthat you shouldn't see too much this time of year.
SEG stuff shouldn't take too long, kept pushing your installer for their bit and then your energy supplier to get the last bit done.
Who are you going to sell your energy to?
4.3kwp JA panels, Huawei 3.68kw Hybrid inverter, Huawei 10kw Lunar 2000 battery, Myenergi eddi, South facing array with a 15 degree roof pitch, winter shade.

I had always assumed I had to export to my provider, however I discovered that's not true, and found outgoing octopus which I a slightly better rate than e.on (my supplier)

I like the idea of being able to shop for the best supply deal independent of outgoing arrangement.

If you keep your supply with Eon, Octopus will only give you the 4.1p rate. If you switch an also have your supply from Octopus you will be able to access the better export rates of 15p fixed or the Agile which changes for each 30 minute slot.

Definitely worth a switch as Octopus have various TOU supply rates that can be great for solar/battery customers.

By my rough calculations, the difference between the low rate and the higher rate would be about £120 a year.

What it doesn't take into account is how much I would lose by being with octopus and being on their supply rates Vs other companies supply rates.  Unless they are the best rate on the market for supply, the difference comes off the cost.  However right now, I guess everyone is the same, due to the price cap...
  • I'm on a fixed rate until Feb 2023 anyway, so I can't switch without losing that deal before then, so I may as well feed to octopus rather than e.on as their rate is marginally better, and I suspect easier to deal with..

I did the same and got my 4.1p SEG set up with Octopus last March, before I moved both electricity and gas supply over the following month.

I've changed tariffs a couple of times and settled on Agile for supply at the moment. It's been stuck 24/7 at the government 33p for a few weeks now but earlier in the year was only that price at evening peak (when I had battery power) and had cheap slots overnight, so could top up the battery if needed. There's even been a few times when I've been paid to use electricity. I'm more than happy to run the washer/dryer/dishwasher, plus fill up battery overnight and get paid 9p/kWh to do it  :D
