Hi folks,
Just wonder if you can help. I have an old SEDv3 so called smart reader which I got with a different energy company than i'm with now. The question I have is when I submit a meter reading for Gas I submit it and on my reader it shows the value as Kwh however the energy company then applies this to the bill:
1* Your gas meter measures usage in units, but like all suppliers, we have to do a bit of maths to turn it into kWh. Here's how it works:
GAS UNITS USED X CALORIFIC VALUE (39.4) X VOLUME CORRECTION (1.02264) ÷ 3.6
GAS UNITS USED X CALORIFIC VALUE (39.4) X VOLUME CORRECTION (1.02264) ÷ 3.6
A good example is I submit a reading increase of say 115Kwh then then convert it to 1287Kwh.
Is this right or is the energy company applying a weird and unfair Kwh alteration?

All gas meters record volume in cubic feet or cubic metres. Smart meters are usually in cubic metres. You should not be giving your supplier a kWh reading for gas.
The kWh figure shown on a smart meter is advisory. Billing is based on the average calorific value of the gas supplied during the billing period truncated to one decimal point. Calorific value varies day by day. All gas bills have to show the calculation used to convert volume to kWh.0 -
Your gas meter does not read in kWh.
It reads in m3 and that conversion turns it into kWh.
Are you taking readings actually from the meter or from the in-home display?0 -
From the in home smart meter. Top right corner

That's not your meter. That's the in-home display. You should not be giving any readings from this - they will be wrong (and in the wrong units).0

I thought that was the whole point of an indoor meter to show the meter reading and then issue those to the energy company..

There may be another reading in m3 or cu m, if not you need to get it directly from the actual meter. If you are sending that figure to the supplier you are paying for 11 times the gas you are using.

The in-home display (please stop calling it a meter, you will keep confusing yourself) is only there to show you, the occupant, roughly how much energy you are using at any time. It is not for giving information to the supplier, it is not for billing, it is not for anything official.
The actual meter is the one that does the measuring and should be reporting that back to the supplier automatically - but it seems like in your case that second part isn't working properly.
Only submit meter readings from actual meters.0 -
The ‘good news’ is that once you sort this out you should be inline for a big refund as the supplier is multiplying the reading difference that you provide by c.11.22.
Go and look in your meter box. What is the make and model of smart meter that has been installed by the supplier? We should be able to tell you how to get a correct meter reading in cubic metres from the actual meter.
Readers and In House Displays should be consigned to the bin.0 -
Thanks I thought my bills were high! The outdoor meter is less than intuitive

Pretty sure it's '9' to get the current reading on those.
Look for one in m3.0
