Cifa removed yet I still can’t open an account

Long story short - a cifa marker 6 was placed on my Halifax account due to fraud. Once this marker was placed on my file all my accounts closed with other banks. I complained to Halifax and they removed my cifa marker as they admitted it was their mistake. I checked with cifa and the marker has indeed been removed yet I’ve been declined even a basic bank account with Santander..

now I get I can try open an account with who I’ve never had a relationship with but how is it fair that Halifax admitted they were wrong and removed the marker yet I’m still being penalised??

Advice please

Have you tried to open an account in the past with Santander?
  • It was removed around two weeks ago and yes I’ve previously had an account with Santander which was closed with Halifax when Halifax put the marker on

I would try opening an account with a banking group that you haven’t had an account with before, so not Halifax/Lloyds/Bos and not Santander.

I’d imagine Santander have automatically declined you based on their internal records they hold for you about the fraud marker which wouldn’t have necessarily been updated when Cifas was updated by Halifax. Although Santander do not have to accept you as a customer and don’t need to tell you why. It might not even be  the cifas marker issue that’s the reason why they won’t let you open another account with them.

The CIFAS will still be showing on your credit files until the next monthly feed comes through from CIFAS. It doesn't show to you but does to banks.
