Octopus/smart meter/exporting electricity

  • My situation is very confusing. The export states it’s in place. Under the import it has a message stuck on the first dot - “Export MPAN request accepted” after several weeks still (I already had one, which they were porting over). Am also having issues with my E7 day and night rates being the wrong way round in the smart meter reading, which is very odd! Starting to get a bit frustrated now as I moved on 30th September…

I can one up on this.
Octopus managed to pull my decommissioned meter from Jan 2022 - I had two electric meters according to octopus, being charged two standing charges  :#
Anyway, they have managed to sort this mess out.
I have SEG on a different account and trying to combine all this into a single account.

Confirm which meter register is actually recording the day/night rates. It's not necessarily the same one it has been in the past.

That might help unpick what's happening, and if it's to your detriment, better target your complaint to get it fixed.

One oddity with my E7 Octopus account. When they took over from E.On in 2020 Octopus swapped Day/Night around. They didn't just read them the wrong way, they actually (remotely) reconfigured the meter so that R1 - which had always recorded 07:30-0:30 and was billed as day under E.On - started recording 0:30-7:30 and was billed at night, vice versa for R2. Total consumption was correct, but because the handover readings were the other way round there was a multi mW jump up in the night reading and an equivalent reduction (and refund) on the day.

Then in Nov 2021 they raised a bill with only one rate listed, taking the opening read from R2 and the closing read from R1 resulting in another massive increase. December billed an accurate (day) amount from a single register and then in January they went back to using reads from both R1 and R2, with R1 now recording daytime usage again. A massive negative usage figure appeared and I actually got a negative bill for one of the most energy intensive months of the year. There have been no unexpected switches or crossed reads since.

As we were on a single rate tariff and both day and night units were charged at the same rate, and everything added up correctly in the end. If we'd actually been on different rates, it would have been wildly different, although I've not calculated in who's favour.
I never actually noticed it at the time, I just left the DD to do it's thing. I only spotted it when I went back to the Nov 2021 bill for the average kWh/day value so I would have something to compare this month to, and saw that instead of the usual ~10kWh/d it was 34kWh/d!

  • That sounds very familiar…. I am in exchange on Twitter DMs with support, who say things are with the smart meter team, but replies have slowed, and that was to do with the export. May need to call them. The first read was the same way around as before. Second read was reversed. If they refunded and charged me it would be hugely in my favour, but it is a complete error. The change in reading does indeed still seem to be the night usage (the usage is about 35%), but they are listed backwards versus the first reading.

I had best response by Twitter DM sent on 25/10. Small flurry between us all on that day & subsequently on our a/c things did seem to start happening more clearly.

Got a Twitter DM from them on 31st saying all up & running & export live from 24th & first payment would be on our Nov bill.

Everything seems to be the right way round & usage has dropped by 2/3 last month compared to same period last year. Some of other's problems make mine look tame, so good luck everyone.

PS Though all 'fine', of the 5 pink progress dots, mine is still on 4! Maybe it will actually complete & move to 5 when an export payment is made.
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

I think mine stayed that way for a while after everything was fine and I was being paid for import. If you want to test it, why not manually give meter readings and it should generate a bill

Still on '4 dots' on the progress bar, but, my export tariff is now appearing on my account page and stats for yesterday are now appearing with the usage charts.

  • I am on one dot, but the export meter reading for yesterday appeared, so hopefully all done! Support on Twitter also fixed my day and night readings being backwards.
  • I am trying to sign up for SEG with Octopus. They are asking me to upload a DNO letter which I can't find in my Handover pack from the installer. I was with Scottish Power for SEG who didn't require that letter. I do have an Export MPAN. Can anyone help by telling me what is in the letter to help me find it?

It's just a confirmation from the DNO that they have processed the G98 application form they will have received from your installer.

Depending on the size of your install, they may have submitted this after the install, which means they're waiting for the DNO to process it. I'm in SSE South region, and they processed the G98 in about 4 weeks, and sent an email afterwards saying it's all ok. That email is all Octopus need.

Check with your installer if they've submitted the G98 and if they're waiting for the reply.
