Porting phone number - rejected due to "a multi-line number"

Moving my broadband and phone to a new supplier and was expecting to be able to take my existing phone number with me. However I've received the following message

We have received an update from the porting agency, and they have informed us that the number that we are trying to port (xxxxxxxxxxxx)is a multi-line number which means that it is a part of a pool of numbers. The porting request was consequently rejected as we are unable to port multi-line numbers to our network.

In my experience "multi line" is a business solution and nothing to do with a domestic line with a single phone. Are they taking the Michael or has the definition of "multi line" changed while I wasn't looking?

It is normally the case that multiple lines on one directory number are businesses, but numbers that were business ( then ceased ) and given a while in a quarantined ceased state could be reissued as residential but any multi line marker should be removed, there may be the odd residential situation where someone has more than one line with the same directory number, but in your case , if it’s your single residential line number you are trying to port , try another provider or challenge the rejection
